Having been quite some time since I last saw Chaos Divine live (at Crowbar, Sydney in 2019) I decided to hop on a plane to Perth a few months ago to catch them opening for Caligula’s Horse at Magnet House. It was my first time in the city, and I was ecstatic to see two of my favourite bands together at what turned out to be a fantastic mid-sized venue right in the heart of the city.

Belting out tracks from One Door to Beacon, it was such a joy to finally hear some of their best songs (in my opinion) off Legacies live. Oh and not to rub it in, but getting handed the setlist after the show was also a total highlight for me! On the other hand, the neck pain the following day from banging my head around… not so desirable.

Much to my delight only a few weeks later, Chaos Divine announced an exclusive 2 date tour, hopping over to the east coast in August – and yes I’ve already bought my tickets for both gigs.

In anticipation for the upcoming tour, I reached out to the guys to get a little bit of insight and was lucky enough to have Michael and Simon take the time to answer my questions. Check out the Q&A and ticket info below!

It’s been quite some time since the band’s been over to the east coast – what are you looking forward to most about this tour?

This will be our first tour since the release of Legacies so we’re really looking forward to playing a bunch of those songs live to our fans on the east coast. The whole process of touring is awesome in general—the travel, the cities, the shows, the fans and the stories are what we love and we’re thankful that we get to experience all that through the band and as mates.

Titled ‘The Formant Tour’, does this anime have any specific meaning for the band?

‘Formant’ is a nod/throwback to our first release ‘Ratio’ and relates to a sound spectrum and how frequency peaks and flows through it. So, a very Prog tour title. To go deeper, if Ratio to Legacies was one full Spectrum, then call this the first formant (F1) of the next.

We’ve seen some teaser shots from the recording studio! How’s it going and what’s the process been like for you guys getting back into the studio?

The re-entry into the studio has been great. We’ve been tinkering away writing bits and pieces but it’s an additional motivator when you get into that environment. We’ve got a few songs we’re working on in the studio now which we’re aiming to put out over the next six or so months and then who knows…

Any chance for a sneak peek of a new song on tour? What else can fans look forward to in the setlist?

I can confirm that there will be something new in the setlist, and on the airwaves 😉 As for what to expect—a bunch from Legacies as we’ve not yet played those songs over east. Bangers from our other records and maybe a dialed up oldy.

Fans are the lifeblood of any band. What do you enjoy most about meeting fans on tour and are there any stories you want to share?

Absolutely, fans are the best and I feel that especially in the heavier music genres (I might be biased) they are fiercely loyal. The thing that always gets me is when fans travel to see us or have a deep connection with a song that they just love, or that got them through something. Power of music, right? Story-wise, good times, good chats, good people always deliver good stories.

For me, we’ve got a group of eastern European dudes that always make it out to our shows in Sydney who are live music fanatics, and they just go off, it’s awesome.

Do you guys have any tour rituals you must do before or after a show? What’s the preparation process like for the band in the weeks ahead?

I wouldn’t say we have any rituals but we enjoy a couple tasty beverages and a Tim-mandated pregame huddle. In terms of prep we just make sure we’re well-rehearsed, have a well thought-out and tight setlist for the night and yeah, bring it!
